HSFC students join the 'Big Debate'

10th July 2017

Big Debate 2017On Friday 7th July, a group of year 12 students from Hucknall Sixth Form Centre travelled to Retford Oaks Academy to take part in the annual DALP Post-16 Big Debate event.

The day started with an introduction to the art of debating and the different styles and protocols. Students were then treated to a session with Luke Staton, a renowned motivational speaker from Retford, who got everyone moving and energised before sharing his stories. Luke was a very engaging speaker who inspired students to reach and achieve their goals.

Our students then chose which debate they wanted to take part in. These were on a series of challenging topics such as, ‘this house believes the death penalty should be reinstated’ to ‘ this house believes reality TV is harmful to society’. The resulting debates were very lively with passionate and reasoned arguments being made by all involved.

Overall, the day was very successful, interesting and entertaining. Students from across the Diverse Academies worked together really well, and demonstrated their knowledge, ability to think, reason and react, all done in a mature and sensible manner. Hucknall Sixth Form Centre will be starting a debating society from September 2017 to help develop and hone students’ skills in this area further.
