Yesterday (6 March 2018), one of our year 7 students was honoured at the Rotary Club 27th Courage Awards, held at Portland College in Mansfield. 11 year old Ione was nominated for a number of reasons, but specifically for her role in supporting her mum as a young carer. Her mum suffers from fibromyalgia, arthritis and kidney disease, and Ione supports with housework and caring for her mum during difficult days.
Miss Shaw, head of house, nominated Ione. She said, ‘As a young carer, Ione has shown great resilience in both the support she gives to her mum at home, but also as a good student at Queen Elizabeth’s Academy, where she is also a prefect. I was delighted to nominate her for these awards, and am so proud to see her contribution recognised here today.’
Ione enjoys art, science and English at the academy and has a long-term aspiration to become a teacher. She is also a talented sportswoman, and is a goaltender for the Sutton Sting ice-hockey team – she has also recently been invited to trials for the Sheffield Shadows team. Miss Shaw continues, ‘Her mum is her biggest fan, and they share a passion for ice hockey – it is great to see her doing so well in this sport.’
