A young carer is a young person aged between 5 to 18 years old, who looks after someone who couldn’t manage without their help. This could mean looking after a parent, brother or sister, grandparent or family friend who has a disability, long-term illness, or problems with alcohol or drugs.

Queen Elizabeth’s Academy supports young carers that are on roll with us by reducing the barriers to their educational attainment and wellbeing.

What might a young carer do?

  • Practical tasks, like cooking, housework and shopping
  • Physical care, such as helping someone out of bed.
  • Emotional support, including talking to someone who is distressed.
  • Personal care, such as helping someone dress
  • Managing the family budget and collecting prescriptions.
  • Helping to give medicine
  • Helping someone communicate
  • Looking after brothers and sisters

Information for Parents and Guardians

If your child has caring responsibilities at home, please make sure you let us know so that we can offer support to your child and your family.

Some young carers worry about bullying and may be tired, worried, find it difficult to concentrate and have limited time for friendships and activities after school.

We can provide support for young carers, and strongly advise completing our young carers form to make us aware of their status.

Are you a young carer?
